My Lundholm Family from
Jönköpings län, Småland, Sweden
My Lundholm ancestors, Jonas Peter Andreasson and family, immigrated from the parish of Näshult, in the province of Småland, Sweden. This immigrant family, who came to the States, arrived and disembarked at Castle Garden harbor in New York City, New York. Today, Castle Garden is in what we now call, Lower Manhattan. They arrived on the 26th of April 1884. Two brothers, Karl Johan (Charles) and Peter August, immigrated 2 years prior to the rest of the family and arrived in the States in 1882. Whether by plan or by chance, these two young men ended up in Winthrop, Sibley County, Minnesota with rest of the family arriving there two years later.
When Jonas Peter Andreasson and his family immigrated to the States, Sweden was still using the patronymic surname practice. Meaning, the child would use the father’s giving name and add son or dotter to his name. Take for instance the eldest child, Karl Johan, would have gone by the surname of Jonasson and his sisters would have been know as Jonasdotter.
Karl Johan and Peter August would have been using the surname of Jonasson when they traveled to the states, and the rest of the family would have traveled under their father’s surname of Andreasson or Anderson. How and why Lundholm become my family’s surname is a mystery to me. After all these years of researching I still have not been able to figure it out. The stories of surnames being changed at Ellis Island or that there were already too many people with the same surname in the states are false presumptions.
For example, when my Andreasson family arrived at the shores of the United States, Ellis Island wasn’t open yet, so the change did not occur there. Surnames could have been changed to phonetical spelling, anglicized or purposely changed by your immigrant ancestor. I don’t have a theory or claim to know how my ancestors came by the Lundholm surname, but it can be broken down to its Swedish roots and would be translated like this: lund = grove or copse and holm(e) = islet (very small island or rock in the water).
Jonas Peter Andreason had two siblings who also immigrated to the States. One of the siblings was a sister, Anna Stina and her husband Karl Magnus Johansson. They traveled with 5 of their 7 children, while the two eldest daughters immigrated before the rest of the family did. I am still looking for this family here in the States. The other sibling who immigrated was Johan Algot Andreason or Anderson. Johan is reported to have been in Chicago, Illinois but again, I have haven’t been able to find any information on him either.
Through my research I have traced this ancestral branch of my family back to the late 1600s. They lived in Jönköpings län and Kronoberg län counties in the province of Småland in Sweden.
Now, I present to you my Andreasson/Lundholm family in pictures, and below the pictures you will find an outline of this family branch, stating with my grandfather Ferdinand Eugene Lundholm.
